The ground between art and activism has long been a passion of mine but more often than not the political theatre that I see allows its audience to let themselves off the hook. To distance themselves from the action onstage by virtue of being in the audience. The urgency of Belarus Free Theatre's productions and the campaigns that accompany them do no such thing.

I first encountered Belarus Free Theatre in 2011 when I saw Discover Love at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The story of state brutality and heartbreak absolutely gutted me and opened my eyes to the violence and opression that is part of life in Belarus. I have followed the company's work ever since and sitting in that audience was the inspiration for many of the projects and campaigns that I have supported.

I am delighted to have joined the BFT team and be producing work that engages with so many pressing issues alongside such insipirational artists.
